Effective Oct. 1, 2007, residents within the unincorporated areas of St. Lucie County are required to register their pets with St. Lucie County's Public Safety Department through participating veterinarian offices or the Humane Society of St. Lucie County.
Approved by the Board of County Commissioners, ordinances require dog and cat owners in unincorporated areas of St. Lucie County to pay a registration fees. St. Lucie County pet registration program maintains and enforces pet owners living in unincorporated area of the county.

The costs are:
- $10 Annually (currently spayed or neutered)
- $25 Life time (currently spayed or neutered)
- $75 Annually (unaltered animals)
- $100 Annual registration fee for Breeders/Sellers
(Discounted rate for registering additional pets that are spayed or neutered)
*New residents to St. Lucie County with pre-existing pet tags of other counties will need to register their pets in St. Lucie County.
Pet owners who do not register their animals could face fines up to the following:
1st offense $100
2nd offense $200
3rd offense Mandatory court appearance
