Basset HoundEffective October 1, 2007, residents within the unincorporated areas of St. Lucie County who own, keep, harbor, maintain or have custody of any dogs and/or cats 4 months of age and older are required to obtain a pet license. Pet owners must license their dogs and/or cats with the County within 30 days of acquiring the pet and/or within 30 days after the owner or custodian takes residence in the unincorporated areas of the county. Failure to register with the County could result in the issuance of citations for each animal found to be in violation of County Ordinance 6-51.

Pet owners must renew their licenses with the County every year, unless they have been registered with a Lifetime License in which case pet owners would send in the pet’s new rabies certificate when the vaccination is renewed in order to keep the tag active. County licenses must be securely fastened about the animal's neck by a collar or other device so as to be clearly visible at all times.

County licenses are not transferable from one animal to another and cannot be transferred from one owner to another. If an animal is rehomed to a new owner, they will have 30 days to comply with the Ordinance.

Asides from being required by law, if your pet goes missing or is found wandering around the streets and has a County License on their collar, Animal Safety Officers, shelters and veterinary clinics will be able to obtain your contact information and get your pet back to you safely.  dog in grass
