Water/Sewer Education Program
Learn where your water comes from, and where it goes next
The mission of the St. Lucie County Water/Sewer Education Program is to advance education and engagement by providing a variety of opportunities for residents and students to learn more about the Public Utilities Department and the water and sewer industry.
The program builds relationships that benefit everyone by raising awareness of the many ways we can all help protect our natural resources and keep our environment thriving.
There are four ways to take part. Water Woman brings a hands-on lesson into your classroom. Treatment plant operators talk with students at job fairs and career days. Guided facility tours show how wastewater is treated and reused. Free quarterly Lunch and Learn events bring industry experts to residents at the Havert L. Fenn Center in Fort Pierce.
Pick the one that fits your group and use the request button in that section. Lunch and Learn events work differently: they are open to any St. Lucie County resident, and the next dates are listed near the bottom of this page.
Classroom Presentations
Kids can lead the way when they understand how their actions can make an impact and influence those around them. Our Water Woman classroom presentations teach kids how they can help protect freshwater resources, and everything that flows in between.
Water Woman focuses on water conservation and on making those habits part of a daily routine. She also walks students through the water cycle and the three forms of water. Hands-on activities demonstrate how certain household items affect our sewer system, plus what it takes to treat our wastewater.
Water Woman will tailor a presentation to any age group while keeping the most important messages and themes. She presents to public, private, charter and homeschool classes, as well as to camps and clubs.

Water and Sewer Careers
From water distribution and wastewater collection to treatment and reclamation, students learn what Public Utilities Department employees actually do all day.
Our industry experts take part in job fairs and career days. They explain how they became treatment plant operators, and what education and knowledge a career in water and sewer requires.
Ask an operator to join your next career event, and give students a look at the work behind the water they use every day.

Facility Tours
Facility tours give participants an interactive learning experience, with indoor and outdoor stops that show how wastewater is treated and reused.
Both adult and student groups may request a tour and see the treatment process firsthand, from the moment water leaves a drain to the point it is clean enough to put back to work.
Lunch and Learns
St. Lucie County residents are invited to learn from industry experts at free quarterly events at the Havert L. Fenn Center in Fort Pierce, at 2000 Virginia Ave.
Speakers share information on a range of utility and recycling topics while participants enjoy a free lunch and giveaways.
Save the date
- Sept. 23, 2026, noon to 1 p.m. Preview new water treatment projects. Peek at the progress of new and expanded utility plants, and find out when residents will see the benefit.
- Nov. 4, 2026, noon to 1 p.m. Commit to recycling right. Bridge the gap between knowing and doing, and take the America Recycles Day Pledge.
