That's a WRAP!

St. Lucie County is proud to participate in the Wrap Recycling Action Program (W.R.A.P.)! Through partnerships with the W.R.A.P. Campaign, Keep Port St. Lucie Beautiful (KPSLB), and several other Florida entities, St. Lucie County has several locations for residents to drop off plastic bags, plastic wrap and film recycling. The purpose of this program is four-fold:

1. To keep plastic bags and wraps out of the environment. 
2. To keep plastic bags and wraps out of single-stream carts (once they go through our system, they are too dirty to be recycled).
3. To ensure plastic bags and wraps are properly recycled.
4. To provide residents with more options to dispose of plastic bags properly and wraps in addition to grocery store drop-offs.

Plastic bags and other wrap materials are recyclable; however, they can cause damage to the single-stream sorting machines. This goes for plastic film, plastic bags, or stringy materials. When the bags and stringy materials are finally freed from the equipment, they’re taken to the landfill, where they’re at risk of escaping into the environment. Plastic bags can be recycled if you take them to your local grocery retailer or one of our four drop-off locations. And of course, you can avoid them altogether by switching to reusable bags.

Items that can go into the W.R.A.P. sites include:

• Plastic shopping bags
• Bread bags
• Bubble wrap
• Clear product wrap, such as the wrapping around paper towels or paper plates
• Dry cleaning wraps
• Produce bags
• Drink case wraps
• Pallet and stretch wraps
• Newspaper bags

W.R.A.P. sites will not accept:

• Six-pack rings
• Frozen food bags
• Pet food bags
• Chip or snack bags
• Cereal bags
• Mesh bags

A good rule of thumb is that if you can poke your finger through the plastic with little effort, it is recyclable at our drop-off locations.

• Oxbow Eco-Center, 5400 NE St. James Dr., Port St. Lucie
