The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Jacksonville District, in partnership with the St. Lucie County Erosion District, will begin beach renourishment operations at Fort Pierce, Florida, on March 13, 2026.

USACE will place approximately 400,000 cubic yards of sand from authorized borrow areas off the coast of Fort Pierce Beach on approximately 1.0 miles of shoreline immediately south of Fort Pierce Inlet. Offloading of the sand will take place from inside the inlet’s south jetty. Operations are planned to be complete by mid-May.

The upcoming renourishment is the continuation of a federal shore protection project initially constructed in 1971, with an additional 14 periodic and emergency federal re-nourishments carried out since 1980. It is being executed under a $15.1 million contract awarded Sept. 19, 2025, to Manson Construction Co.

The federal project strengthens shoreline resilience. It reduces storm damage to residential and commercial infrastructure, critical transportation arteries, developed land and coastal armor, and helps offset persistent coastal erosion impacts attributed to the federal inlet. It is 77.76 percent funded by the federal government and 22.24 percent funded by the non-federal partners (St. Lucie County). The County maintains a close partnership with the state of Florida’s Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP), which typically offsets the non-federal share of construction by 50%.

Work will be underway 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including weekends and holidays, until completion. All equipment will be lighted in compliance with U.S. Coast Guard requirements. USACE urges all boaters and navigators to exercise caution when transiting work areas and consult local Notices to Mariners for relevant marine updates.

Temporary restrictions to immediate work areas on the beach will be in effect while sand placement is underway. USACE thanks the public for respecting these requirements to ensure public safety.

General Project Updates

Construction of the 2025/26 Fort Pierce Shore Protection Project will begin on March 13, 2026. Temporary closures of the South Jetty at Jetty Park will happen as the Contractor prepares for construction.

Jetty Park / Fort Pierce Beach Update 3/13/26

Seaway Drive in front of the restaurants by the jetty will be temporarily closed Tuesday, March 17 and Wednesday, March 18, as crews stage equipment for the beach renourishment project. Vehicles will still be able to access parking at Jetty Park through the northwest side of the roundabout.

Residents and visitors are asked to avoid the jetty as it will be closed from Wednesday, March 18, through Tuesday, March 24, as crews install the walkway over the pipe that will pump sand onto the beach.

Please note that the beach access just south of the jetty will be closed during this renourishment project. There are other public beach accesses to the south along A1A.
