This resource contains information about common scams and fraud, including consumer protection tips such as:

  • Verify a contractor’s license with the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation;
  • Get multiple estimates, and be cautious of required, large upfront payments;
  • Ask to see a contractor’s proof of insurance; and
  • Research a company and contractor thoroughly before signing an agreement.

Floridians can file a complaint at DBPR about an unlicensed contractor at the Department of Business and Professional Regulation site.

Report contractor fraud directly to local law enforcement.

Civil complaints can be reported to the State Attorney General's Office by visiting the Office of the Attorney General site.

 

Don't Become a Victim of Home Repair Scams!

Unlicensed contractors and home repair scams cost Florida residents millions of dollars each year. Protect yourself by learning to recognize common warning signs and understanding what steps you can take to verify contractor credentials before signing any agreements.

Common Red Flags

Door-to-Door Solicitations

  • Offers "Today Only" specials
  • Unsolicited calls or emails
  • Too-Good-to-be-True Estimates

Verbal Agreements

  • Contractor refuses to put project terms into a written contact

High Pressure Sales

  • Won't take "no" for an answer; Aggressive and intimidating communication

Cash Only / Immediate Payment

  • Won't accept check or credit
  • Requests check made to them personally - not to a business name; or "off the books" to save money

Large Down Payments

  • Requires money up front for materials
  • Demands large amount of money before any work is performed

Recycled Materials

  • Offers discounts to use materials remaining from another job, but only if you commit on the spot

What YOU Can Do

Verify the Contractor's License

  • Ensure the contractor has an "active" license BEFORE signing a contract
  • Contact St. Lucie County

Obtain At Least Three (3) Bids

  • Compare costs and scope of work

Insist on a Written Contract

  • Ensure all project details, materials, and terms are documented

Pay with Check or Credit Card

  • Always get a receipt and make checks payable to the business/company you hired
  • Never pay with cash

Report ALL Unlicensed Contractors

If you suspect unlicensed contractor activity or have been a victim of contractor fraud, report it immediately. Your report helps protect other St. Lucie County residents from becoming victims.
