The Savannas Recreation Area is a public campground operated by St. Lucie County. To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all guests, the following rules apply to every camper, visitor, and camping unit on the property.

General Expectations

The Savannas offers camping, canoeing, fishing, picnicking, and wildlife viewing. All guests are expected to help keep the area safe, clean, and comfortable for everyone.

Campground Occupancy & Length of Stay

  • Each campsite may have up to six people.
  • RV campers may stay up to 155 days within a 12-month period.
  • Tent campers may stay up to 14 consecutive days, with a maximum of 45 days within a 12-month period.
  • Visitors must leave the campground by 10:00 PM.
  • Quiet hours are observed from 10:00 PM to 8:00 AM.

Site Registration & Payment

  • Rent is due weekly in advance. If not paid, campers will be asked to leave.
  • Payment must be made in person at the Trading Post.
  • A 30-day notice is required before leaving to receive your security deposit.
  • No refunds for early departure, except the deposit (with proper notice).

Eviction & Removal

The County may require a camper to vacate who:

  • Fails to pay rent when due
  • Damages facilities
  • Repeatedly violates campground rules
  • Engages in disruptive or unsafe behavior

Important: Personal items left behind will be stored for 30 days and then discarded. RVs left after check-out will be towed at the owner's expense.

Camping Units & Vehicles

  • Only one camping unit is allowed per campsite.
  • Up to two vehicles may be parked at the site. Guest vehicles must use designated parking areas.
  • A small pup tent or screened room for children is allowed, but no additional sleeping units.
  • Campsites must remain tidy. Items such as appliances, indoor furniture, or clotheslines are not allowed outside.
  • Tarps, clothing, or coverings may not be draped over tents.
  • Camping units must be in good working condition, free of major damage or deterioration.
  • All motor vehicles must have current registration and license plates.
  • Sleeping in cars, trucks, or truck-bed tents is not permitted.
  • No vehicle repairs, oil changes, or equipment overhauls may be performed in the park.
  • Motorcycle use is limited to entering and exiting the campground only.

Utilities & Equipment Requirements

  • Most sites include picnic tables, grills or fire rings, and water, sewer, and electric hookups.
  • Backflow prevention devices on water spigots are required by state law and may not be removed.
  • Only UL-approved electrical cords may be used and may not cross roadways.
  • All wastewater must be handled according to Florida Law (Chapter 10 D-26):
    • Greywater and blackwater may not be dumped on the ground
    • Sewer connections must use a tight seal ("donut") and a supported hose ("slinky")
    • Sewer lines may not rest directly on the ground

Fire Safety & Outdoor Use

  • Ground fires are allowed only in designated fire rings.
  • Grills may not be placed on picnic tables.
  • Outdoor furniture must be designed for outdoor use.

Laundry

  • Washers and dryers are available on site.
  • Using trees, shrubs, hoses, restrooms, or sinks for washing or drying items is prohibited.
  • Laundry lines are not permitted.

Pets

  • Each camping unit may bring up to two domestic pets.
  • Pets must be properly vaccinated, licensed, and kept on a 6 to 8-foot leash at all times.
  • Pets may not be left unattended or staked outside.
  • Owners must clean up after their pets and are responsible for their behavior at all times.

Supervision of Children

  • Children must be supervised by a parent or responsible adult at all times, including in restrooms and other facilities.

Refuse & Cleanliness

  • All garbage must be placed in the dumpster located near the sanitary dump station.
  • Each campsite must be kept clean, orderly, and free of clutter.

Personal Property & Liability

  • The Savannas Recreation Area is not responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged items.
  • The campground and St. Lucie County are not responsible for any injury or property damage caused by stray golf balls from the neighboring golf course.

Severe Weather & Emergencies

  • During tropical storms, hurricanes, tornadoes, or other emergencies, campers may be required to leave the campground for safety.

Behavior & Conduct

The County may evict any visitor who violates campground rules or engages in:

  • Disorderly or disruptive conduct
  • Excessive noise
  • Public intoxication
  • Profanity, violence, or threatening behavior
  • Violations of federal, state, or local laws

If law enforcement is called to a campsite due to rule violations, expulsion may occur without a refund. Violent behavior results in immediate removal from the property.
