Aquarium Volunteer at the touch tankA variety of volunteer opportunities are available for individuals age 16 and up. No experience is necessary. All training will be provided. Minimum commitment of 3 hours per week for 2 months for most opportunities. Please note that all volunteers must undergo a background check. Opportunities include:

Touch Tank Interpreter. Touch tank volunteers interact with visitors of all ages to tell them about the exhibit’s sea urchins, sea cucumbers, sea stars, hermit crabs and horseshoe crabs and to ensure they are treated properly. Touch tank volunteers must be comfortable touching live animals, standing for extended periods and tolerating prolonged exposure to saltwater. Two shifts are available daily, Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.; 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. (and Mondays, January through March); Sunday, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m..

Aquarium Guide Aquarium guides interact with visitors of all ages throughout the Aquarium and lead daily feeding tours for up to 25 people. Aquarium guides must be comfortable with public speaking, answering questions from visitors and standing for extended periods. Two shifts are available daily, Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.; 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. (and Mondays, January through March); Sunday, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m..

Aquarium Husbandry Aquarium husbandry volunteers help staff with all aspects of keeping the Exhibit’s living collections. Duties may include feedings, systems monitoring, life support equipment maintenance, water chemistry, coral care/aquaculture and collecting new specimens. Husbandry volunteers must have a compassion for living animals, be detail-oriented, have good record-keeping skills, be able to stand for extended periods, tolerate exposure to saltwater and climb short ladders and stairs. This position is a must for anyone interested in studying marine biology. Two shifts available daily, 9 a.m. – Noon; 2 p.m. – 5 p.m..

Feeding Specialist Aquarium feeding specialist volunteers help staff with feeding the Exhibit’s fish and invertebrates. Duties include weighing, cutting and measuring food and feeding the Exhibit animals exactly as instructed. Feeding specialists are also responsible for restocking food containers, adding food supplements and target feeding a variety of organisms. Feeding specialists cannot be allergic to shellfish and must.be able to follow instructions exactly, be detail-oriented, have good record-keeping skills, the ability to stand for extended periods and be able to climb short ladders and stairs. Two shifts available daily, 9 a.m. – Noon; 2 p.m. – 5 p.m..

Special Projects volunteer A special projects volunteer is essentially a “handyman.” This position does require a working knowledge of basic electrical, plumbing and carpentry skills. Assigned projects will be based on the volunteer’s skill set. Special projects volunteers help staff with a variety of repairs, improvements and with designing and fabricating new displays and specimen collecting devices.

Aquarium Yellow AngelfishPhotography and Digital Media volunteer. Photography volunteers use photography and videography to document exhibit inhabitants, their behaviors and changes in the Exhibit’s 6 model ecosystem aquariums over time. The photographs and videos are used by staff to check the status of organisms and to track changes in aquariums, while providing educators with content for new signage and social media posts. Photography volunteers are also responsible for reviewing and editing the Exhibit’s extensive photography collection with support from the Exhibit manager. This is a good opportunity for someone detail-oriented, has good record-keeping skills and is interested in learning to identify a large variety of local marine life. A camera is not provided, but most mobile phones have good cameras. The exhibit has an older model, GoPro. This opportunity doesn’t have a designated time, although a weekly commitment is preferable.
