St. Lucie Water Champions is a free action-based program aimed to encourage St. Lucie County adult residents to take part in monitoring, service projects, and citizen science efforts benefiting the St. Lucie River and Indian River Lagoon. The program consists of both digital resources and unique in-person field experiences. Along with developing projects to solve local water issues, the program aims to educate participants on the important, complex role that water plays in our environment. Join the initiative and experience insightful wetland explorations, behind the scenes water treatment facility tours, seagrass science investigations, kayak adventures, and more! Come be a driving force to make change in our community and do your part to support a clean and healthy watershed!

St. Lucie Water Champions is scheduled for select Saturdays throughout the year. Oxbow Eco-Center will serve as the base site and transportation will be available for off-site field experiences. Registration is now open!

Sea Turtle Conservation Efforts on South Hutchinson Island with Ness Michaels, biologist with Inwater Research Group
- South Hutchinson Island serves as an important habitat to several sea turtle species, ranging from hatchlings to adults. Learn how Inwater Research Group works with Florida Power and Light to protect these endangered species that call our waters home. Biologists will share the importance of this scientific research and how you can help save our sea turtles too. Optional transportation from Oxbow Eco-Center to and from the facility will be provided.

What Does it take to be a Water Champion?

For Water Champions, each piece matters!

Education: It’s your duty to learn. Broaden your sources. Expand your knowledge.

Understanding: Interpret your knowledge in the real world. How does what you have learned impact your views?

Service: Share what you have learned within the community. This important piece of the puzzle can make the largest impact! Get out there and cause a flood!

Action: Let’s do this! Take your understanding and apply it towards taking action and making a difference. Time to get physical!

The St. Lucie Water Champions series is built for residents to get involved as much as suits your availability. All in-person sessions, service projects, and resources are a la carte and can be done at your convenience.

To “graduate” the series and be recognized as an official St. Lucie Water Champion, each participant will complete the following conditions:
