Historical Interest
These preserves bear the name of Steven J. Fousek, who dedicated nearly 30 years to St. Lucie County and played a key role in rallying voter support for a $20 million bond referendum aimed at preserving environmentally significant lands. Under his leadership, significant accomplishments include using the funds from the voter-approved bond alongside various other funding initiatives to secure $78 million in land acquisitions, leading to the protection of over 9,000 acres of ecologically important lands across more than 25 sites in St. Lucie County, ensuring that future generations can enjoy these natural treasures.
