This Preserve encompasses 54 acres of natural floodplain ecosystems adjacent to the North Fork St. Lucie River (NFSLR). The area features a picturesque 1/2-mile hiking trail where visitors can explore the intriguing and concealed life of the riverine floodplain and the North Fork St. Lucie River Aquatic Preserve.
In 2003, St. Lucie County obtained the Captain Hammonds property using funds from the 1994 St. Lucie County Environmentally Significant Lands Bond Program, a local bond approved by voters, which was complemented by the Florida Communities Trust Program, a state initiative aimed at preserving and ensuring passive public access to Florida’s remaining natural wonders. The acquisition of this site facilitated the preservation of the vital ecological corridor that extends along the North Fork of the St. Lucie River (NFSLR).

Historical Interest
Captain Hammond, a sea captain hailing from Boston, arrived in Florida in 1895 to enjoy his retirement, just a year after Henry Flagler's railroad reached south Florida, specifically West Palm Beach. In 1900, Captain Hammond retired and purchased this property, becoming one of the region's earliest snowbirds.
Note
Following a significant rainfall, certain sections of the trail may become flooded. It is advisable to wear appropriate hiking equipment and exercise caution while navigating the trail.
Parking is located at Petravice Preserve, head west along the main trail towards the North Fork of the St. Lucie River. Proceed across the beautiful pedestrian boardwalk bridge, which crosses the river oxbow and brings you to Captain Hammond’s Hammock Preserve.
