St. Lucie County roads get new life

Asphalt millings are reclaimed from Naylor Terrace on April 1 as part of the chip seal process. Once reclaimed, base material needs to cure for 14 days before the new surface may be applied.
Road improvements are under way around St. Lucie County.
The County Road and Bridge Division reports that chip sealing will commence on the following roads beginning April 20:
- Palmetto Avenue - First Street to South End
- South 2nd Street - Midway Road to Melton Road
- South 3rd Street- Melton Drive to Notlem Drive
- Notlem Drive - South 3rd Street to Hosbine Street
- Goforth Road - U.S. 1 to East End
- Duban Terrace/South 7th Street/Temple Drive – Glenview Avenue to Kanner Drive
- Duban Terrace – Kanner Drive to South Dead End
- West Lake Drive – King Orange Drive to North Dead End
- Naylor Terrace – King Orange Drive to North Dead End
- Mura Drive – King Orange Drive to North Dead End
- Avenue G – North 37th Street to North 33rd Street
- North 33rd Street – Avenue Q to Avenue G
- North 35th Street – Avenue I to Avenue F, including about 300 feet of Avenue F
- Enders Road – Citrus Avenue to Dead End
Chip seals cost approximately $100,000 per mile of road. This is a significant savings when compared to paving them, which would require construction of drainage, need right-of-way for detention ponds, survey, engineering, and permitting. Paving would cost about 10 times more than chip sealing.
The chip seal process may leave small rocks or pieces of asphalt along the surface of the road. Driving recklessly or at increased speeds can turn some of that debris into projectiles, which can lead to chipped glass, damaged paint, or even injuries to pedestrians. Please drive with extra caution and obey speed limits.
Chips are set in asphalt on Ashley Street at the intersection of South 2nd Street on April 21.
South 33rd Street is milled and overlayed on April 29.
Additional roads will be milled and overlayed beginning April 20. These include:
- April 20: South FFA Road – Picos Road to a quarter mile to the south
- April 27: South 33rd Street – Okeechobee Road to Peterson Road
- May 4: Fort Pierce Boulevard – Indrio Road to Emerson Avenue
During the mill and overlay process, the top layer of pavement is removed by grinding the street. Once removed, a coat of adhesive oil is applied. Following that step, the new layer of pavement is installed and leveled. Work is conducted on one lane at a time.
All dates are weather permitting.
Flaggers and signage will help direct drivers within work areas. Motorists are advised to use extra caution.
