Emergency repairs to Johnston Road at the Fort Pierce Farms Water Control District (FPFWCD) Canal 1 culvert crossing are complete and the roadway reopened on February 12.

The section of road, which is approximately one-half mile south of Indrio Road, closed in October 2025. An underground culvert pipe had collapsed and caused unsafe conditions. Two adjacent pipes were also deteriorating.

St. Lucie County worked to safely restore the cavity that opened beneath the road. In an abundance of caution, the County also repaired the two adjacent pipes as part of the project.

On behalf of the County, Shenandoah repaired two 120-inch corrugated metal pipes (CMP) and one 72-inch CMP. The work also included excavation and removal of debris at the site of the collapse, as well as restoration of the roadway pavement. Slip-lining was identified as the most appropriate method of repair for this project, and a new pipe was fed into each of the existing channels.

The 2018-voter approved Half Cent Infrastructure Tax enabled the County to complete these repairs, which give motorists a safe travel route between Indrio and Angle roads again.

Repairs to the culverts at Canals C-16 and C-17 are expected to begin in late March. Watch the Board discuss this project during the March 3 Regular Meeting.
