Drainage improvements come to Harmony Heights

This investment in the community will help protect residents from future stormwater flooding. It will also provide water quality benefits by intercepting and treating unregulated stormwater runoff.

New dry detention ponds and drainage infrastructure are seen in the Harmony Heights subdivision on February 20.

Drainage improvements in the Harmony Heights subdivision are nearly complete.

Because of the age of the area, the community previously lacked an overall stormwater management system. St. Lucie County Public Works constructed dry detention ponds and associated swales within Harmony Heights. As a result, roadways were constructed and new driveway culverts and driveways – within the County’s right-of-way – were also added.

This investment in the community will help protect residents from future stormwater flooding. It will also provide water quality benefits by intercepting and treating unregulated stormwater runoff.

This was the third phase of the community retrofit project. The 300-plus acre subdivision located in unincorporated St. Lucie County northwest of Fort Pierce was divided into phases to facilitate design and construction.

This project was made possible with the help of funding through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARP) of 2021.

Several men work on digging a grass swale in front of a home. One man is in the shallow swale digging, while two others collect debris on the road. A construction vehicle with a digging arm sits on the road, as well.

Work takes place on a new drainage swale in the Harmony Heights subdivision on January 13.
