National Manatee Appreciation Day

Visitors can meet a real manatee researcher and learn all about manatees during Manatee Discovery Day. Beth Brady of Florida Atlantic University and founder of Sirinian International is a scientist who studies manatees and manatee vocalizations. She will lead an exciting, kid-friendly morning of activities at the aquarium. Learn about manatees, help put together a real manatee skeleton, see and hold super cool manatee biofacts like bones and a manatee brain in a jar, and learn how a manatee “talks” to other manatees with squeaks. Best of all, children can record their own manatee “squeaks” and aquarium staff will provide an mp3 recording and a digital spectrogram (a visual representation of voices) to keep as souvenirs of your manatee adventure. This program is free with admission to the Aquarium ($4 adults, $3 children under 17, children 3 and under free). Registration is not required, but it is appreciated. Please call 772-465-3271 or email SMSEducation@si.edu to let us know.
