The Smithsonian Marine Science Lecture Series returns on Thursday, March 14 at 7 p.m. at the Pelican Yacht Club for a presentation by W. Owen McMillian of the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute on “Evolution on the Wing.” The bright color patterns of butterflies, beetles, birds and fishes reflect the ways that animals solve problems to survive and reproduce. Owen’s research is aimed at discovering the origins and genetic mechanisms of how those color patterns are generated by animals. He will highlight some recent work in neotropical Heliconius butterflies, which is focused on understanding the color changes in their wings. The lecture will be held in the Indian River Room of the Pelican Yacht Club at 1120 Seaway Drive on South Hutchinson Island in Fort Pierce. A reception will follow and a cash bar will be available. No reservations are required. For questions please call 772-465-3271.Return to full list >>
