Following the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, hundreds of scientists began a decade-long research program studying the mechanisms and impacts on the waters, sediments and life in the Gulf of Mexico. As we approach the 9th anniversary of the spill, the results of these field surveys, modeling efforts and laboratory experiments are creating a holistic picture of the impacts of oil spills and what may occur during the next mega spill.
