Baling & Recycling Facility

The St. Lucie County Baling & Recycling Facility processes nearly 1,300 tons of waste per day. The baling facility is where household, commercial and industrial waste are processed (cardboard, metal, and wood are removed for recycling) and baled into dense bales (cubes). The bales are then transported to a working area of the balefill and stacked like building blocks. This method allows us to put nearly twice the amount of garbage into the same amount of space as a conventional landfill.

Leachate Ponds

Any water that touches or goes through the waste is considered to be leachate. The liquid is drained through the waste and collected in perforated pipes at the bottom of the landfill. It is then pumped into the double-lined leachate ponds and then pumped, by way of a force main, to the Fort Pierce Utilities Authority for treatment and disposal.

Construction and Demolition

An average of 400 tons of construction and demolition debris are received each day.
Construction and demolition (C&D) debris is taken to the C&D processing facility. The material is sent through the system where dirt, rocks, concrete, block, wood, metal, and cardboard are removed for recycling.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Scale House

As required by the State of Florida, all incoming waste is weighed and categorized by waste type. A daily average of 1,300 tons of all waste types cross over the scales.

Landfil Gas Collection - Management System

As required by Federal regulations the methane created by decomposing waste is collected through 90 wells of an active collection system. The St. Lucie County Baling & Recycling Facility has a long term contract with a local juice maker to purchase all of the landfill gas to be used as boiler fuel.
