Chemicals Used By District

The chemicals used by the district are designed to have maximum effect on mosquitoes with as little impact on the environment as possible. Many of the products employed by the district use growth regulators (hormones), which prevent mosquito larvae from changing to adults or bacteria that exclusively attack mosquito larvae. Other products employ mineral oils or large molecule alcohols that cover the waters surface with a thin layer of film that prevents the mosquito larvae from getting air from the waters surface. Adult mosquitoes are controlled with Pyrethrum or Organophosphate based products.

The tables below list all products presently used by the district and contains links to product labels and MSDS sheets which contain detailed information about each product. Labels and MSDS sheets are in Adobe Acrobat format.

Methoprene (Altosid) based products.

These products are generally used for control of mosquito larvae. They contain a growth regulator that prevents mosquito larvae from changing into adults.

Bacterial based products

These products are used for the control of mosquito larvae. They use either Bacillus thuringiensis (BTI) or Bacillus sphaericus. These bacteria exclusively attack mosquito larvae.

Mineral Oil and Alcohol based products

Used for the control of mosquito larvae in open water areas. Because the surface film is so thin, it does not affect other organisms in the environment. ULV oil is used to dilute ULV (fogging) chemicals.

Organophosphate and synthetic Pyrethrum based products

These products are used for the control of adult mosquitoes either from ULV (fog) trucks or hand held thermal foggers. This district only uses Dibrom at times of mosquito borne disease threats and its application is generally done from aircraft. Scourge and Permanone employ a synergistic additive called Pipernyl Butoxide to enhance the products efficacy. Permanone 10EC is sprayed on surfaces as a barrier spray to eliminate mosquitoes resting on walls and plants.
