March 24, 2005 - Major Structural Reconstruction of Indian River Drive Completed

The major structural reconstruction of Indian River Drive, extensively damaged by Hurricanes Frances and Jeanne and closed since September, has been completed by the Federal Highway Administration's (FHA) deadline of today, March 24, 2005. The 13-mile stretch of highway - from Savannah Road south to the Martin County line - has been closed to the public and only open to local residents. In order to receive 100% reimbursement from the FHA on the $30 million project, county engineers had to meet the six-month reconstruction deadline. Reconstruction is complete on all three segments of the project, however, final inspections and examinations by St. Lucie County Engineers will be taking place throughout the month of April. County engineers expect to open the roadway to the general public on April 30 or sooner.
