April 18, 2006 - Historical Museum Requesting Fort Pierce WWII Memorabilia

St. Lucie County Historical Museum is extending an invitation to the public to submit World War II wartime memorabilia to the Museum for possible inclusion in the Museum's upcoming exhibit "Away All Boats--Amphibious Assault from Fort Pierce."

Photos, artifacts, clothing and news articles dating from 1943-46 and relating to daily life as civilians in Fort Pierce, as well as objects related to the U.S. Navy Base in Fort Pierce will be considered for temporary loan and display for the upcoming "Away All Boats" exhibit. The special exhibit, running from May through December 2006, will commemorate the 60th anniversary of the closing of the Fort Pierce base in 1946.

According to John Donlon, museum superintendent, "Over 100,000 men were trained in Fort Pierce to participate in the many important amphibious landings of World War II, including Normandy, Iwo Jima, Tarawa, Saipan and Okinawa. The Museum would like to hear from those who were stationed here and families who lived in the Fort Pierce area while the Base was operational."

For more information about the exhibit, or to submit items for the exhibit, contact John Donlon at (772) 462-2058.
