Friday, September 30, 2011 - Fort Pierce Library Announces October Movies
The Fort Pierce Branch Library announces its ''Friday Matinee'' lineup for October. Held every Friday, the library presents a free film, starting at 2 p.m.- Oct. 7 - "On a Clear Day You Can See Forever" (1970) featuring Barbra Streisand, Yves Montand and Bob Newhart. Daisy Gamble, an unusual woman, who hears phones before they ring, sees a doctor of hypnosis to help her quit smoking. The doctor discovers she can regress into past lives and different personalities. Running time: 129 minutes; rated G.
- Oct. 14 - "The Carpetbaggers" (1964) featuring Alan Ladd, George Peppard and Robert Cummings. Peppard plays a hard-driven industrialist more than a little reminiscent of Howard Hughes. While he builds airplanes, directs movies and breaks hearts, his friends and lovers try to reach his human side, and find that it's an uphill battle. The film's title is a metaphor for self-promoting tycoons who perform quick financial takeovers, impose dictatorial controls for short-term profits, then move on to greener pastures. Running time: 150 minutes; rated PG.
- Oct. 21 - "Tea With Mussolini" (1999) featuring Cher, Maggie Smith, Judi Dench and Joan Plowright. Semi-autobiographical tale from the early life of director Franco Zeffirelli. An illegitimate child is raised by an Englishwoman in pre-WWII Fascist Italy, part of an English community in Florence presided over by a diplomat's widow. Elsa Morganthal Strauss-Armistan is a wealthy American collector of modern art who visits these "Scorpioni" on occasion. Running time: 117 minutes; rated PG.
- Oct. 28 - "The Getaway" (1972) featuring Steve McQueen, Ali McGraw and Ben Johnson. Doc McCoy has been granted parole. The catch is that Sheriff Beynon expects a small favor from McCoy for his generosity: Robbing another bank. Beynon does not really intend to let McCoy walk away after the heist and neither does co-robber Rudy Butler, but stopping Doc proves a trifle difficult. Running time: 122 minutes; rated PG.
