Paleo Hammock

Project Purpose:
To protect diverse natural plant communities and one of the most significant archaeological mounds recorded in St. Lucie County. 

Project Description: Paleo Hammock contains a variety of upland and wetland plant communities, including: hydric hammock (38 acres), wet prairie (37 acres), slough (4.5 acres), and depression marsh (.5 acres). The property is dominated by a unique hardwood hammock contains tropical and subtropical species, some more than 100 years old. The site also has historical significance, and is especially important to understanding the archaeological of the interior Indian River/Lake Okeechobee area cultures. 

Acquisition Planning and Status: The project lands were purchased on June 27, 2001. The total project costs was $508,449. Florida Communities Trust provided 47% of the total project costs. The remaining funds were provided from the Environmentally Significant Lands Bond Fund.

Owner/Manager: St. Lucie County Environmental Resource Division

Public Use: Hiking, wildlife viewing and observation of unique archaeological materials are provided.
