Spruce Bluff Preserve

Spruce Bluff - 97 acres

Purchased in 1997 to protect cultural and historic resources, as well as preserve a pristine wetland surrounded by scrub.

Size: 97 acres
Habitat: A mix of upland and wetlands including scrub, scrubby flatwoods, mesic flatwoods and depression marsh.
Trails: Two (2) self-guiding interpretive trails. The northern loop is paved and discusses the 1891 settlement of Spruce Bluff.  The southern loop discusses the significance of an early Native American mound and historic uses of native plants along the trail.
Other Improvements: Boardwalks
Commonly Seen Wildlife: Heron, osprey, ibis and egrets.
Location:

611 SE Dar Lane., Port St. Lucie.  A small parking lot is located near the intersection of Dar Lane and Peru Street in Port St. Lucie, FL. From Port St. Lucie Blvd go south on Floresta. Take a left onto Southbend, then the first left (Peru). About a few miles down, you will take a left onto Dar Lane.

Historical Interest:

Site of an early pioneer settlement and cemetery along the banks of the St. Lucie River.  First settled in 1891, Spruce Bluff consisted of a community of several families with a school, post office and sawmill.

  • A prehistoric Indian mound is located on the southern end of the preserve.
  • A planned and platted community, over 60 homes were proposed to be built on the site prior to public ownership.
