Paleo Hammock Preserve

Paleo Hammock - 80 acres

The site was purchased in 2001 to preserve an unique hammock with archaeological significance.

Size: 120 acres
Habitat: A mix of several habitats including: Hammock with some very old Hickory, Florida Elm, Sugarberry, Live Oak, Laurel Oak, Depression Marsh and basin swamp.
Trails: (1) mile self-guiding interpretive trail leads you through the hammock.
Other Improvements: A ten (10) foot tall observation deck overlooks a small basin marsh.
Commonly Seen Wildlife: Deer, turkey, ibis, heron, barred owl, cardinal, mockingbird, catbird and flycatcher.
Location:

8551 Carlton Road, Port St Lucie.  From SR 70 and the Florida Turnpike, go west on SR 70 8.8 miles. At  Carlton Road (CR 613) turn south (left) and go 4.2 miles. The parking lot is on the right.

Paleo Hammock Directions

Management: St. Lucie County Environmental Resources.  This site was acquired with the assistance of Florida Communities Trust's Florida Forever Program.
Historical Interest: A known archaeological site.
Future Improvements: A trail will lead to Hackberry Hammock to the west and eventually to a Regional Water Supply Reservoir and the Pinelands Preserve.
Notes: Site is connected to other adjacent Preserves to the east and west.
