Our Mission:
The Mission of the Housing and Community Services Department is to assist the citizens of St. Lucie County toward self-sufficiency in a dignified and cost effective manner.
The Housing and Community Services Department is directed by Beth Ryder and comprised of the following divisions:
The Community Services Division assists county residents in accordance with our mission statement. Services include support in applying for federal, state, and local resources. Programs include the community action agency, veterans services and transit.
The Housing Division administers the State Housing Initiative Partnership (SHIP) program, the HOME Investment Partnership Program, the Community Development Block Grant 2005 Disaster Recovery Iniative, the CDBG DRI Supplemental Program and the Small Cities CDBG Program.. It also manages the County's Housing Disaster Plan.The Library System was started as early as 1903, a small group of citizens in Fort Pierce decided to create a reading room to be set up in the Community Hall, a building located on the site of the present HD King Generating Station on South Indian River Drive. Having no money, they approached churches, civic organizations (of which there were very few) and individuals to loan books for the enterprise which was manned by volunteer workers. The second home of the "reading room" was in the Cobb Building at the foot of Avenue A in Fort Pierce. Read more....
