Our Mission:St. Lucie County Community Services Department provides assistance to residents to improve quality of life through information, resources, and services.
The Community Services Department is directed by Beth Ryder and comprised of the following divisions:
The Resident Support Services Division assists county residents in accordance with our mission statement. Services include support in applying for federal, state, and local resources. Programs include Social Services through the Treasure Coast Community Action Agency and Transit.
The Housing Division administers the State Housing Initiative Partnership (SHIP) program, the HOME Investment Partnership Program, the Community Development Block Grant Disaster Recovery Initiative (CDBG DRI) and the Small Cities Programs. This division coordinates the County's Housing Disaster Plan. Depending on eligibility criteria, grants allow for a variety of services, including repair of health and safety issues for homeowners, down payment assistance for home purchase, foreclosure counseling, infrastructure projects to prevent future hurricane damage, purchase and rehabilitation of foreclosed property and others.
The Veteran Services Division provides services with the highest level of sensitivity, compassion and understanding to Veterans and their families.
The Library System was started as early as 1903, a small group of citizens in Fort Pierce decided to create a reading room to be set up in the Community Hall, a building located on the site of the present HD King Generating Station on South Indian River Drive. Having no money, they approached churches, civic organizations (of which there were very few) and individuals to loan books for the enterprise which was manned by volunteer workers. The second home of the "reading room" was in the Cobb Building at the foot of Avenue A in Fort Pierce. Read more....
