The year was an exceptionally good one for St. Lucie County. Through
proactive leadership we made substantial progress for St. Lucie
County.
Along with all of the
measures enacted to protect the natural beauty of our county, we
have found a way to temper protection with progress. Several new
companies have opened their doors and several existing companies
have expanded to accommodate demand. This shows that the economy in
St. Lucie County is experiencing a growth that is balanced with good
planning.
The coming year will
be a challenge for all of the elected officials in our county but I
am sure with cooperation and team work we can make 2001 the best
year ever for St. Lucie County. I feel privileged to be part of this
wonderful community and look forward to my next four years! |

The year 2000 was a notable year for St. Lucie County. While we
faced many challenges, the County made significant strides in
economic development, growth management, environmental initiatives,
and educational and social programs.
The County
experienced a banner year for economic development with the creation
of several thousand new jobs, including new businesses and expansion
of existing firms. A new economic council was formed through public

| and
private partnerships which will focus on higher-paying, higher-skilled
jobs. The Board also modified the Job Growth Incentive Program to raise
the average wage requirements and actively partnered with the School
Board, Indian River Community College, Enterprise Florida, and others to
promote job training and educational opportunities.
Revitalization of the
Orange Blossom Mall in Fort Pierce and the new Community Redevelopment
Agency in Port St. Lucie are noteworthy projects. These efforts foster
economic development and promote smart growth through in-fill
development, new town centers, and cost-effective use of public
resources, such as existing roads and utilities.
The County will also
benefit from the passage of the "Everglades Restudy" which
includes federal and state funding earmarked towards water quality
improvement projects for the St. Lucie River and Indian River Lagoon.
Finally, after one of the
most heated political campaigns in history, I want to thank my fellow
Board members for their high level of commitment to serve the public in
a bipartisan atmosphere with an emphasis on meaningful citizen
involvement. I am privileged to serve as a local elected official and I
look forward to another challenging and rewarding year.
