Parks and Recreation

School Children and their teachers, 1,375 in all, were greeted by enthusiastic staff and volunteers for their tours of the Museum and the Gardner House. Volunteers gave 3,561 hours to the museum. Volunteers greeted visitors, worked at the admissions desk, conducted tours for children and adults, worked with collections and data entry. The Museum is very thankful for its volunteers, their time and energy. A Volunteer appreciation dinner was held at the Fort Pierce Community Center. The St. Lucie Historical Society supplied the food.

The museum received a National Endowment for the Humanities Consultant Grant to determine the feasibility of expanding the fishing heritage exhibit and creating a boat building exhibit. Consultants from Mystic Seaport Maritime Museum spent several days with the staff and others in the community. The museum Superintendent was awarded a grant to attend "Moving On Line" workshop by the Smithsonian Museum. The grants were made available with a donation from the Sara Lee company. The Museum staff participated in several distance learning workshops with the St. Lucie County School Board. One of the Museum's on going tasks is to computerize the collection records and photograph the entire collection.

The Civic Center received some needed improvements during 2000. The remodeling of Room 101, our largest meeting room, has given us a banquet/meeting room for up to 150 persons. The acquisition of new meeting room furniture, tables and chairs, for our smaller, meeting room Rome B, has given us a more aesthetically pleasing atmosphere for meetings up to 40 persons. During the year, 72 events encompassing a total of 330 days were held in the auditorium and meeting rooms. Our clients were able to use the new refrigerators, beverage coolers, lighting fixtures, and sound equipment. The concessions for the Civic Center were contracted to a concessionaire in 2000. One of the most needed improvements made was the replacement of the old "marquee" with a new "electronic message center" on 25th Street in front of the Civic Center Complex.

The Recreation Division Hosted a full schedule during 2000. Sports activities included a total of 35 high school football games; 130 children participated in the Lakewood Park Soccer Program; Thomas J. White Stadium was the site of the High School Baseball Showcase; a basketball tournament at the Lincoln Park Community Center; plus the full regiment of men and co-ed softball and other baseball tournaments were held throughout the county. The St. Lucie County Sports Complex hosted the Rainbow Festival, the Millennium Celebration, annual hay ride and bonfire, and Kids Fest in addition to another spring training season of New York Mets baseball.

Events like the Little Miss Jingle Bell Pageant, wedding vows renewal ceremony and classes like mahjongg, quilting, photography, painting, jazzercise and bridge were held at the Fort Pierce Community Center. A variety of adult bus trips were also conducted from the Community Center including Cypress Gardens, Walt Disney World and the Museum of Cartoon Art.

The Recreation Division tried something new in 2000 with a Spring Break Camp. Approximately 30 youngsters attended camp each day at the Dan McCarty Gymnasium. The annual Summer Camp program served more than 1,700 children in St. Lucie County.
